Track 5: Breakthroughs and Best Practices (BB)

Session BB-5: A Strategic Approach to the USG IPv6 Roadmap

03/24/2010

3:15 PM - 4:30 PM

Prerequisite: None

In May 2009, the Federal CIO Council announced the release of the "Planning Guide/Roadmap toward IPv6 Adoption within the US Government”, aimed to provide U.S. government agency leaders with guidance on how to successfully integrate IPv6 throughout their enterprise.

With over 50 pages of recommendations – from developing comprehensive IPv6 security plans to testing changes to devices – agencies face the task of incorporating IPv6 in to their networks, with as little trouble as possible.

In an educational session, John Curran, President and CEO of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), and Peter Tseronis, Deputy Associate CIO, U.S. Department of Energy, will break down the various recommendations in the document, and explain how they can be included in agencies’ existing work plans to minimize disruption and cost.

John and Peter will also review IPv4 depletion and IPv6 adoption statistics, address allocation trends, and the IPv6 educational resources available to help agencies prepare their networks for IPv6 adoption.

Learning Objectives:

  • Help attendees better understand the IPv6 Roadmap recommendations
  • Review the urgency behind the recommendations, due to IPv4 depletion
  • Show attendees how they can implement IPv6 with little disruption and cost
